GRATON, CA

Tucked quietly away off major roads in western Sonoma County, Graton (pop. 1,707) is a laid-back home to artists, artisans, writers, retirees, working-class families, and some of the best restaurants in the county.

 

Graton was once considered a "rough little apple country town" but now boasts a growing culinary reputation for two restaurants. Both places provide a delightful small-town vibe, where locals, noted winemakers, and tourists all happily mingle. Underwood Bar and Bistro offers French, Mediterranean, and Wine Country cuisine in an aura of relaxed sophistication, while Willow Wood Market Cafe doubles as a general store and local gathering spot, provides what the Michelin Guide called "Good, down-home comfort food … dished up with genuine hospitality."

 

Also a popular spot, the family-owned Mexico Lindo specializes in fresh ingredients and Cali-Mex cuisine, with a lovely back-patio dining option. As is true throughout Sonoma County, wine tasting is always a delightful option. Or, for shoppers and browsers, Graton's small business district of restored historic storefronts is home to local stores selling antiques, fine art, pottery and other crafts, gifts and more. The Graton Gallery and adjacent sculpture garden showcase a large selection of California fine arts and artisan crafts.
